MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has successfully restored electricity service to nearly all customers affected by power outages caused by the intensified southwest monsoon rains brought about by Super Typhoon Nando (international name: Ragasa).

Meralco reported that, as of 7:00 AM today, power restoration efforts have been completed for the majority of its service areas, with only around 1,700 customers still experiencing service interruptions. These remaining customers are located in portions of Bulacan, Metro Manila, Batangas, and Cavite, and Meralco crews are currently conducting final restoration or “mopping up” operations.

“We are now conducting mopping up operations and our crews will not stop until we restore service to the affected customers,” said Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications.

In light of Tropical Storm Opong and the continued effects of the southwest monsoon, Meralco remains on heightened alert. The power distributor has implemented precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impact of the new weather disturbance.

One such measure includes issuing safety reminders to billboard owners and operators, urging them to temporarily roll up billboards to prevent damage or accidents due to possible strong winds.

“We continue to closely monitor weather developments to ensure the readiness of our crews and facilities. We also remind everyone to observe electrical safety, especially those in flood-prone areas,” Zaldarriaga added.

Electrical Safety Reminders

Meralco advises the public, especially those in areas prone to flooding, to strictly follow these electrical safety precautions:

Turn off the main electrical power switch or circuit breaker during flooding and avoid touching electrical appliances or outlets with wet hands.

Unplug all appliances from wall sockets. If possible, disconnect permanently connected equipment and unscrew light bulbs.

Clean electrical equipment of mud and debris using rubber gloves and wear rubber-soled shoes.

Ensure all electrical wires, outlets, and devices are completely dry before use.

Have a licensed electrician inspect appliances and home wiring before turning power back on. Do not use flood-damaged electrical equipment.

Customers may report power outages and other electricity-related concerns through Meralco’s official channels:
