BATANGAS – After undergoing monitored home isolation and receiving appropriate medical care, the first Mpox case recorded in CaLaBaRZon, a 12-year-old male, was tagged as recovered and given clearance on September 13, 2024.

The patient started having symptoms on August 10, 2024, with fever and rashes. He tested positive for MPVX Clade II DNA. He had no history of travel anytime three weeks before the start of symptoms.

Mpox is an infectious disease caused by the MPXV. It can spread between people, mainly through close contact with the skin or mucosal lesions of an infected person, by talking or breathing, kissing, touching, hugging, sexual intercourse, or respiratory secretions. Transmissions can also occur via indirect contact with contaminated materials such as bedding, clothing, or linens.

Common symptoms of Mpox include a skin rash or mucosal lesions that can last 2-4 weeks, accompanied by fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, muscle aches and back pain, headache, and low energy.

To prevent infection, the DOH-CHD CaLaBaRZon consistently reminds the public to adhere to health protocols:

 1. Avoid close and intimate, skin-to-skin contact with individuals who have Mpox or manifest symptoms of Mpox infection;

2. Wash hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer;

3. Thoroughly clean and disinfect floors, surfaces, and frequently touched objects; and

4. Ensure bedding, clothing, or linens are thoroughly washed.

Mpox is treated with supportive care for symptoms such as pain and fever, with close attention to nutrition, hydration, skincare, and prevention of secondary infections.

To safeguard yourself and others against infectious diseases, it is vital to recognize the signs and symptoms, understand how the virus spreads, and know what to do if you fall ill.| – BNN
